Sergei Mavrodi, a Russian businessman and founder of the MMM Pyramid scheme, a Ponzi scheme that deprived millions of Nigerians of their savings in the 1990s, has died of a heart attack. According to reports from a Russian media, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, on Monday, the 62-year-old was rushed to the hospital late on March 25 with pain in his chest and died several hours later. Mavrodi’s MMM financial pyramid was a typical Ponzi scheme in which earlier investors receive their profits from subsequent investors. Mavrodi promised returns of 20 percent to 75 percent a month, as well as lotteries and bonuses for investors. As soon as the number of new clients stopped growing, the pyramid collapsed, causing huge financial losses for at least 10 million people, in some cases leaving them destitute. In 1994, Mavrodi was elected as a lawmaker, a decision he later said was to ensure he received immunity from prosecution. In 1996, he lost his parliamentary mandate.

A  Sri Lankan opposition legislator Thursday said US officials prevented him from taking a flight to Texas from Moscow where he was an observer for the Russian presidential election. There is tension in Oke Ako and Irele communities in Ikole local government area of Ekiti State following the alleged killing of a Fulani herdsman on Monday.The herdsman, whose name was given as Babuba Dengi, was killed in a bush between the two communities by settlers suspected to be Benue State indigenes.‎The incident forced the state Governor, Ayo Fayose, to summon a meeting on Tuesday night at the Government House in Ado Ekiti, where he warned farmers and herdsmen against turning the state to a “war zone.” The governor has given a marching order to security agencies in the state to fish out the killers of the herdsman and bring them to justice. The Ogun State Police Command, has arrested a 29-year-old driving instructor, for allegedly raping and killing a National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member, serving in Abeokuta, Modupe Taiyese. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, told journalists at the scene of the crime in Abule Ayo area on Thursday that the suspect had confessed to the crime. Iliyasu said prior to the arrest of the suspect, the Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, John Okon, had complained to the command about a missing corps member in the state. Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has revealed the changes he will make in his squad from the one that drew 1-1 with Algeria when they face Argentina tomorrow in Russia.
